Crafted with Intention

Hart & Helix began as a personal practice—before it became a brand.

I’m James, named after my grandfather, known to me as Pop. He shaped the way I understand craftsmanship, responsibility, and care. From him, I learned to hunt, to respect materials, and to take pride in maintaining the things in my life rather than replacing them.

The name Hart—an old term for a stag—is an homage to him and to the lessons learned through time spent outdoors together. It reflects strength earned through patience, the quiet confidence of experience, and the idea that what endures is what’s looked after.

One of the most meaningful objects I own was made by him.

After an elk hunt, he fashioned the animal’s ivory teeth into two necklaces—one for himself, and one for me. I now carry both. That moment, and what it represents, continues to shape how I think about materials, memory, and permanence.

Those values are carried forward in every piece I make.

Hart & Helix exists from that same place of intention.

Leatherwork, for me, is both creative and grounding. Taking a flat piece of leather and transforming it—cut by cut, stitch by stitch—creates space to slow down and reflect. The process rewards patience and attention, and the result is something functional, lasting, and deeply personal.

Each piece is Michigan made, crafted by hand using full-grain Italian leather chosen for its durability, texture, and ability to age with character. No two pieces are exactly alike. They reflect the life they’re used in.

Hart & Helix is not about excess or spectacle.

It’s about restraint, honest materials, and objects made with the expectation that they’ll be carried, used, and kept.

"Crafted for life."
